Thank You For Another Great Year!

Many of you have expressed your gratitude for our services and help getting you recovered from your injuries, surgeries and aches and pains from daily life. We just wanted to take this opportunity thank you, our patients, for trusting us with your Physical Therapy needs.  We also greatly appreciate the many new patient referrals we have received from your friends and family, there is no greater compliment than referring your loved ones, it truly shows your trust in us!

Not just another "Painful Chore" (part one)

 

It has finally come...SNOW!

 

And we all know that with snow comes everyone's favorite chore...SHOVELING!

 

Snow shoveling can be a dangerous chore when you factor in all of the risks. In a recent study 45% of primary care physicians reported seeing more back pain sufferers during winter than any other time of year.  The cold weather can lead to cold muscles which are easily injured due to their tight nature. Bending and twisting while lifting and moving heavy loads can often cause muscle strains or a disc injury. Slipping and falling on ice and snow can lead to muscle strains, bruises and possible fractures.

 

Peak Performance Physical Therapy can definitely help to relieve the pain and speed your recovery time if you happen to injure yourself while snow shoveling. A recent study showed that Primary Care Physicians refer their patients with low back pain to Physical Therpaists more than any other specialty. While non-operative approaches to handling your back pain are an appropriate place to start we would rather you not become injured in the first place!

 

Here are a few simple tips that can help reduce your risk for "Snow Shoveling Pain":

  • Check with your doctor. Because this activity places high stress on the heart, you should always speak with your doctor before shoveling or snow blowing. If you have a medical condition or do not exercise regularly, consider hiring someone to remove the snow.
  • Dress appropriately. Light, layered, water-repellent clothing provides both ventilation and insulation. It is also important to wear the appropriate head coverings, as well as mittens or gloves and thick, warm socks. Avoid falls by wearing shoes or boots that have slip-resistant soles.
  • Try to clear snow early and often. Begin shoveling/blowing when a light covering of snow is on the ground to avoid dealing with packed, heavy snow.
  • Be sure you can see what you are shoveling/blowing. Do not let a hat or scarf block your vision. Watch for ice patches and uneven surfaces
