The Backpack Blues...

Many days, after returning home from a long day of classes, students find their bodies sore and tired. Some may think their necks and backs are stiff from sitting in classes all day, but the pain may actually be the result of carrying books improperly.

Sept. 15, 2010, marked the 10th anniversary of National School Backpack Awareness Day, which aims to inform students and parents about the safety concerns of carrying heavy backpacks.

Research from the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics stated that students who carry excessive amounts of weight in their backpacks may experience numbness in their shoulders, posture deterioration, muscle spasms and long-term back pain.

To combat the back pain and the need for future physical therapy treatments, doctors recommend lightening the load.

A healthy goal is to carry less than 10-15 percent of your body weight.
